It has been the best purchase for a hard drive I’ve ever had. The main reason why I wanted to go for minimax is because I wanted a stackable hd for my Apple Minimac. Moreover I have a huge library of music and video files which I have been collecting for several years. Thankfully I havenot lost any of it. I did come across a few options from Seagate and Western Digital and also used them earlier. I wanted to try out the Iomega hard drive because some of my gadget-crazy friends had this. They do not select a hometheater or a flash drive or a hard drive in a frenzy. So on their recommendation, I went in for iomega minimax hard drive. I am happy that I am enjoying the huge space of 1 TB available to store all my media files. And it looks good than it does in the images. To begin with, I dint even have an initializing trouble – it installed easy and far quieter compared to most other hard drives I have ever used. That’s indeed some relief to my ears and to those in the same room! With 3 USB ports I cant ask for more. Even as I use two of them at a time, I still have one left. With Firewire 800, the speeds are just right for a 1 TB version. Because of additional space, am also using it to store some professional data which I may need for quick reference when working from my home. The icing on the cake is the price. I am extremely happy that it comes with an easy cost tag. I mean I doubt if I can get a lower price with these functionalities intact!

I decided to run a speed test against my existing external hard drive, a: Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500 GB USB 2.0/FireWire 400/eSATA Desktop External Hard Drive.

    Here are the test results:

Test file size: 11.9 GB (12,859,736,064 bytes)

    Contains: 6 files, 0 folders

COPY operation used for test. Times rounded to nearest minute. Firewire connection used for both drives, using same port (separately)

    seagate-down (read): 7 minutes

    seagate-up (write): 6 minutes

    iomega-down (read): 6 minutes

    iomega-up (write): 6 minutes

As you can see, the Iomega drive just barely has an edge over the Seagate drive in download (read) speeds of the test package. That doesn’t mean that the data is conclusive, just that in this one test, the Iomega was slightly faster.

Also, the drive works fine under Windows, you just have to format it. You can then use the USB or Firewire connections with no problem. Formatted, the drive reports as 931GB in size (this is due in part to advanced disc technology using a large chunk of the disk for disc management data and software, and also in part to disc drive manufacturers REFUSING to use the base-2 number system (that Windows and all other computer systems use) when they calculate disc size. They insist on using base-10, which skews the numbers higher than they would be in base-2. So, when you buy and format this “1 Terabyte” drive, what you will actually get (formatted under Windows) is 931GB of space. That is still quite nice, but it is also not 1024 GB, which is what a terabyte actually is.

So, that is my review. Decent drive, decent size, no major bells or whistles (I deleted the obnoxious programs they have pre-installed on it which kept trying to pop-up and bother me, or overlay my control over the drive) that are worth mentioning. Basically, you are just paying for stackable drive size. It seems pretty stable to me, and fairly worth the price too.

I’m so glad I received I have this hard drive as I needed more room for my desktop Mac Mini. Although anyone can use this hard drive with any computer, it’s just perfect with the Mac Mini to stack. Okay, for the most part this is a hard drive, so it works very well as a nice hard drive. The only thing I wish it were smaller to match the smaller form factor of the newer Mac Minis. Also more aluminum. Those are only looks though. This hard drive is great, quiet, and so far I know, it doesn’t get very hot.

I was able to partition the drive as sort of an experiment to have for various backups. I know if the hard drive waivers, there go my backups, but with 1TB, it’s fun to play.

In the end, not much to say, but this drive works great!

I’ve used this as an external hard drive for my macbook pro and I couldn’t be happier! I only have two usb ports on my mac so being able to use it as a hub is great. Although you can either use usb or firewire I actually use firewire more now just because its faster and I only need two usb ports right now. If I were to need more though, (keyboard, camera, more hard drives, ect.) The usb hub function would be tremendously important. I tried some online storage stuff first, (it took 14 hours to upload 14 GB of stuff with DSL!) but with this drive on usb it took 5 minutes to upload 30GB! Nice.

Bought the Iomega MiniMax to back up my iMac via the FireWire 800 connection using Time Machine. Nothing could be simpler – just plugged it in and started using it. No issues, no problems – works as advertised.
