I use a lapboard. I can barely hear the fan but this thing has turned my MacBookPro from a very hot computer to mildly warm. I'm fairly amazed. I have no idea how long this will last but at this price, who cares. If it fails I could still use it and the sturdy pads to simply lift the laptop off the lapboard and letting air under it.
