  1. J. McWhirter says:

I purchased this product to protect my MBA from getting worn / scratches when sliding the MBA in and out of my messenger bag. Once I took this product out of the wrapper, I was pleased with the ‘glossy’ look of the product – the ‘smoke’ color combined with the high sheen of the plastic made it look really sexy.

It easily installed by ‘snapping’ on the outside of the MBA – it also has vents and holes that lets the MBA function as it was designed.

Overall, I am pleased with this product except for three things –

1 – the outside had scratches and looked worn within 1 week of use (the only other thing I keep in my messenger bag is a leather portfolio).

2 – the two covers weigh about .75 lbs – seems like a lot when the MBA itself weighs 2.75 lbs…seems like it could have been manufactured at a lighter weight.

3 – the weight of the cover when attached makes the open screen move back and forth when I type (the screen doesn’t ‘vibrate’ without the cover on it) – which makes me wonder if it isn’t too much weight for the design…and it makes me wonder what effect it is having on my hinge….

Still, it is protecting my MBA….so I will continue to use it – and I would recommend to you, if my three listed concerns are of no concern to you.

I have several speck shells, but this model is just too heavy for the delicate Macbook Air screen. The weight of it makes the screen bonk down and i’m worried it will loosen the hinge.

First, this case fits on the MacBook Air very well. It is snug all around and I am not the slightest bit concerned that it will ever come off accidentally. I’d say the fit and finish was closer to BMW quality than Chrysler.

As far as protection, this case is designed to keep the exterior of the Air from getting scratched. That’s all the protection it is going to provide, but it does that very well. It’s not going to protect the Air from a fall or a coffee/keyboard mishap, but it isn’t designed to.

The case makes “the world’s thinnest notebook” not so thin any more. It also adds some weight. But it is how the weight is added that scares me. There is a known problem with the hinge assembly on the Air. I’ve already had to have the lid replaced once by Apple because of the hinges. And the added weight of the Speck Case on the lid just feels like too much stress on those hinges. When the lid is open just a couple of inches, the added weight of the case makes it fall closed. So it scares me that I might protecting the Air from cosmetic damage while doing real damage to the hardware.

Not sure I am ready to take that chance.

I purchased this hard case for my mac book air with hesitation because it was replacing an Incase hard case that I purchased only 6 months earlier that broke. I was leery that this case would do the same. I was happy with the price-point and that was the reason I decided to try Speck. So far I really like it! I had the Incase hard case in blue before and I purchased this case in smoke. It makes my laptop look really sleek. Both of my children commented and thought I bought a new laptop. The second thing I like about this hard case over the Incase one is that this case is HARD plastic. The Incase plastic was not hard. It had a flexibility to it and when I would carry my laptop around opened…you know when you are moving it from the bed to the night stand to get up, or the counter to the table, the stress on the plastic, ultimately did that thing in and it broke. This case has a harder shell and also clips onto the laptop more securely which I hope will prevent it from breaking. The only thing that I am not crazy about it the smoothness of the case because even though it has feet at the bottom, the case is smooth and it slides off my lap easier than the laptop without the case or the Incase hard case that is a matte plastic and does not have that slide factor. I just use my fan lap desk, but that creates weight that I sometimes do not wish to have. All in all, I am happy with this purchase.
